Tagliatelle Wank

curls of tagliatelle against a dark backgroundSeptember 26, 2015: An Italian anon says they refuse to eat tagliatelle made by someone who can't pronounce it properly (i.e. as in Italian, [taʎʎaˈtɛlle]). Wank breaks out: Italians are offended by incorrect pronunciations of Italian and British Italian food cooked in very non-Italian ways, and Brits assert that it is pretentious to pronounce foreign words in a reasonable approximation of the source language pronunciation.

It's a warning sign, like “spag bol” or “spag bog”. When people refer to it as spag bol you know you're not going to get anything that resembles Italian food, and what you do get gives me the collywobbles because it's so wrongular, likewise tag-lee-a-telly.”

People who aren't Italian are going to sound like a pretentious tit going around pronouncing tagliatelle the Italian way, sorry to say. I would wager you would find very few Brits who would, never mind whether they're capable of cooking spag bol to your exacting standards or not.”

“…I suddenly feel like I understand a lot more about Britain. And it's not a good feeling.”

Hundreds of comments are devoted to how closely you should try to imitate the pronunciation of a foreign word.

Later in the post, nonnies share recordings of their pronunciation of “tagliatelle.”

Tagliatelle, and the pronunciation thereof, becomes a meme.
