August 8, 2013:
There are certain fans I've started to think of as migratory SJ fandom, where they get into a canon because it's supposedly got good PoC/female/LGBT characters, pronounce it THE BEST THING EVER, and then slowly start to turn on the fandom from within. The canon does something problematic, either a big mishap or a relatively minor thing, and they rage over it; they start to go after other fans for Not Doing It Right; they stir up lots of wank and make the fandom tense and unpleasant. Then they burn themselves out, lose interest in the canon or flounce out because the fandom is soooo awful, and leave the remaining fans to deal with the fallout from all the wank.
I'd like to add that part of the uncomfortableness they add to fandom is that they make it so no-one can discuss anything they liked or disliked about the canon in a non-SJ way. If people wanna discuss SJ issues and only SJ issues, that's totally fine, but there's so much more to canons than that. Sorry, I liked Elementary because it was an above-average procedural and Sherlock and Joan were wonderful, not because Joan broke feminist barriers– I did think an Asian woman Watson was great– and called people out on their sexism and racism. Of course, ever since Watson called Moriarty a bitch, you can see the SJ fandom abandoning the show pretty damn quickly.
The term is modeled on "Migratory Slash Fandom."
